A mysterious blue flash over Europe. A wonderful picture from the International Space Station

On October 8, French astronaut Thomas Pesquet published a photo aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in which he captured something unusual over Europe. The image is a single frame of taller material and shows a blue glow that might look like a mysterious explosion over our continent. In fact, the blue “body” in the sky did no harm and was almost invisible to people on Earth. This is called a transient light event – a rare lightning-like phenomenon that affects the upper atmosphere. Thomas Pesquet accurately captured the bolt of lightning in the upper atmosphere. It is very difficult to photograph these types of flashes from Earth. It is very high in the sky and is often obscured by storm clouds. The flash itself lasts literally milliseconds or a few seconds.
