In psychopathology, apathy is defined as a state of decreased sensitivity to physical and mental stimuli. The cause of its occurrence may be physical diseases, factors of a psychological nature (depression, schizophrenia,
bipolar disorder, neurosis, and trauma), as well as malnutrition, tiredness or exhaustion.

Apathy sometimes accompanies hypothyroidism, which is also a symptom that may indicate diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Symptoms of apathy can be characteristic of people with cancer.

As you can see, apathy can be caused by a number of different factors, so as soon as it is diagnosed, it is necessary to conduct appropriate research to determine the causes of its occurrence.

Apathy – Symptoms

Apathy causes a variety of symptoms. A low response to physical and mental stimuli of an apathetic person leads to:

  • Reluctance to engage in physical and intellectual activity,
  • avoids social interactions,
  • She is dazed and depressed,
  • indifferent to the ocean,
  • He does not care about his appearance (may not follow the rules of hygiene), does not eat a healthy diet (the need for hunger may disappear).

In the case of apathy, the need to engage in sexual activity may also disappear.

Apathy – the cure

The appearance of symptoms that indicate apathy requires consulting a doctor and implementing appropriate treatment methods. The first thing you need to do is find out the reason for your indifference. If reduced sensitivity to stimuli is caused by mental difficulties, it may be necessary to start psychotherapy and carry out pharmacotherapy. In such cases, the following applies, inter alia, to antidepressants. A prompt diagnosis and implementation of effective treatments usually have a good prognosis.

Apathy occurs not only in humans but also in animals, primarily in dogs. As with humans, apathy in dogs can be caused by a variety of factors, and further investigation may be required when symptoms appear. Unusual behavior of our pet should cause concern, including:
