Thermal regulation – what is it and what is it for?

Thermoregulation is the body’s ability to maintain an adequate body temperature. In humans, the temperature is 36.6 degrees Celsius and this makes us feel better. Any change in temperature indicates some health problem, although the temperature of individuals may drop slightly. A deviation of one or two tenths is not a problem, while a decrease in temperature of 0.5 ° C may indicate weakness of the body.

However, constantly feeling cold, feeling that our feet and hands are cold, or that we are getting cold, is not a good thing. They can have various causes and arise from circulatory problems, poor functioning of the cardiovascular system, iron deficiency in the body or thyroid diseases.

Low tolerance to cold

It is difficult to clearly identify when there is a decrease in cold tolerance. This is supposed to happen when most people feel that thermal conditions are favorable and out of proportion to the coldness of the ambient temperature. This can be demonstrated, among other things, by about metabolic disorders and to be the first symptom of many different diseases, for example psychological. The feeling of cold, which affects the whole body, should not demonstrate a low tolerance to cold; Sometimes the feeling of cold is only in certain places of the body, such as the hands, feet, head, nose, or ears.

Diagnosis of the cause of reduced tolerance to low temperatures includes, among other things: conducting basic diagnostic tests that may reveal, for example, disturbances in the functioning of the endocrine system and disturbances in hematopoietic functions. In the absence of obvious causes of the pathology, it often turns out to be neurological.

Feeling cold and sex

Feeling cold depends in part on gender. Women usually feel a cold more often and catch a cold faster. This is due to the different physiological structure in addition to the different functioning of the endocrine system. Estrogen makes women feel cold in a different way because their blood vessels narrow more quickly. They are also more prone to hypothermia because their skin is thinner and more sensitive.

Low tolerance to cold – causes

There are many possible causes of feeling very cold. Below, we describe 5 common conditions that can cause low tolerance to cold. You should always consult a doctor with the following symptoms.

1. Iron deficiency in the body

Anemia is very common among people of all ages (especially women), and it is one of the most common reasons for reduced tolerance to a cold. In this case, the feeling of cold is often accompanied by other symptoms that clearly indicate the need to see a doctor. They belong to:

  • constant fatigue
  • Dizziness,
  • weakness,
  • pale skin and mucous membranes,
  • excessive sleepiness
  • bleeding gums
  • Tongue seals
  • physical condition problems,
  • Chest pain and palpitations.

Anemia can be diagnosed with a basic blood test. It is very important because similar symptoms occur at the onset of very serious diseases, such as leukemias.

2. Vitamin B12 deficiency

Severe cold can also be caused by a lack of vitamin B12 in the body. Promotes anemia, disorders of blood formation, weakness of the body, the development of neurological diseases.

To make up for vitamin B12 deficiency, a properly balanced diet must be followed. Products of animal origin, incl. Liver, but also dairy and fish products. Supplements that improve overall body functions often contain vitamin B12. However, its dosage should be based on the deficiency, so instead of reaching for supplements, it is better to have comprehensive blood tests.

3. Hypothyroidism

Thyroid disease can cause you to experience hot and cold spells. In the case of hypothyroidism, the overwhelming feeling of cold is exactly what drives us to wear a thick jacket while the people around us feel comfortable in a light jacket. In addition to poor tolerance to cold, hypothyroidism also causes weight gain, weight loss problems, chronic fatigue, and dry skin.

4. Circulation problems

Severe cold can also indicate problems with the functioning of the circulatory system. Cold hands and cold feet often occur in this condition. When the blood circulates more slowly, your metabolism slows down and you feel cold. Sedentary or sedentary work, hypothyroidism, use of certain medications, autoimmune diseases, a stressful life, or excessive use of stimulants can contribute to cardiovascular problems.

An overwhelming feeling of cold often accompanies people belonging to the group of exomorphs, that is, people who have an extremely low percentage of body fat and a fast metabolism.

6. Neurosis and depression

Various types of neurosis as well as depression and other mental disorders can cause a reduced tolerance to cold, which initially appears only in stressful or uncomfortable situations. In this case, there are also many physical symptoms, such as dizziness, shortness of breath, a feeling of unreality, digestive problems and body tremors.

7. Lyme disease

Lyme disease, more commonly known as Lyme disease, is an increasingly common cause of intolerance to cold temperatures and excessive cold. Depending on the organ or system Lyme spirochetes are attacking, the feeling of a cold may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, nervous disorders, and frequent flu-like infections. Diabetes can also make you feel cold. The disease causes numbness or tingling in the fingers. These types of symptoms may appear slowly and not many people are aware of them. It is worth doing sugar tests, especially if there are also other signals from the body that indicate illness, such as dry skin, constant thirst or excessive urination. A glucose loading test is used to diagnose diabetes.

10. Not getting enough sleep

Sometimes, severe cold is associated with insufficient sleep. If we feel sleepy, we feel tired and weak. We don’t have the right amount of energy, we feel sand under our eyelids, we feel cold. One night without sleep is enough to significantly reduce the efficiency of the body.

Remember that sleep deprivation increases cortisol production in the body. This increases stress and releases nervous tension. Lack of sleep lowers our mental state, contributes to deteriorating moods, and makes us feel frustrated with life. Poor concentration and ability to relate facts, it is difficult for us to focus on the tasks being performed. One good night, catch up to sleep, is enough to feel better.

11. Anemia, underweight and low body mass index

Another reason why you feel freezing cold is weight loss. Having a BMI of less than 18 contributes to an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia, circulatory disorders, gingivitis, and worsening depression.

To prevent this from happening, you should eat healthy food and eat regular meals. Your diet should include vitamins and trace elements as well as nutrients to help your body function well.

12. Dehydration
