Appeal from V4 countries to the European Union on the migration crisis

As we read at the beginning of the statement, the heads of the foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of the Visegrad Group countries held a meeting with parliamentary partners from the Baltic states on this issue and, after discussion, agreed, among other things, as follows: They strongly condemn “the exploitation of the phenomenon of irregular migration, which has been artificially created as part of hybrid measures against the European Union to achieve political goals.

“Using people to achieve political results clearly violates basic European values and international norms. The actions of the Belarusian authorities, which clearly and systematically endanger the lives of vulnerable people, are unacceptable” – stressed the parliamentarians in V4 in the statement.

As members of the European Union and NATO, they emphasized that they were in solidarity with Poland, Latvia and Lithuania, and that they supported all necessary measures in line with the fundamental values and norms of international law, taken in response to the current crisis which requires close coordination among the main international partners.

“Protecting the territory of sovereign states remains a priority, however Belarus must allow free access to humanitarian aid and journalists. Moreover, we appreciate the efforts of all EU member states in tackling the problem of irregular migration and protecting the EU’s external borders,” the signatories said. Statement.

It also called on the European Union to “consider without delay a strategic response to these situations in order to increase the effectiveness of its measures and prevent any future attempts to use migration as a weapon.”

“We affirm that people who have attempted to cross our external borders illegally, instead of using established procedures for international protection applicants, will be turned back. Comprehensive dialogue and partnership with countries of origin and transit are essential and will benefit all parties, so we stress the need for action by These countries, ensuring full support and cooperation in the field of readmission and return “- this was stated by parliamentarians from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

They wrote that members of the Visegrad group “remain vigilant against the risk of further escalation and Belarusian provocations on the borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, carefully controlling the consequences for the security of our region.” “We also call on the Belarusian regime to stop these activities immediately, and to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms in accordance with the rules of international law,” a statement from politicians from the V4 countries read.

They also declared that they would continue to support a democratic, independent, sovereign, prosperous and stable Belarus. The signatories to the document emphasized that “the voice and will of the Belarusian people will not be silenced.”

There was a crisis on the borders of the European Union and Belarus, in which the number of attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian border with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland by immigrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions increased sharply in the spring. The European Union and its member states assert that this is the result of the deliberate actions of the regime of Alexander Lukashenka, which is actively using migrants in response to sanctions.

Until December 2, a state of emergency was in force in the Polish border area near the border with Belarus. Journalists do not have access to these sites. The media can rely almost exclusively on agencies and government reports regarding the situation at the border.
