NASA has sent the DART spacecraft into space to be on a collision course with a small asteroid. It will collide with its surface, and scientists will be watching to see if it changes the asteroid’s path through space. This is the first test of its kind in history. The collision will occur within three days.
DART will hit the asteroid on Monday. The ship was launched in November last year.
You will collide with the cosmic rock Dimorphos. This effect should be enough to change the orbit on which it is traveling. NASA wants to check in this way if this is possible and at what scale.
DART will crash at 14,000 mph.
“Does it really help humanity?”
– It’s just a gap of some kind in an area that we’re not aware of. A kind of potential that we don’t know exists. It allows us to show how our knowledge about asteroids can really help humanity, said Thomas Zurbuchen, scientific director in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
Scientists indicate that if the mission is successful, this means that there will be a chance for a possible “defense” of Earth, when an asteroid appears on our way and threatens the planet.
The shipwreck mission cost $325 million.
