It was very close, but unfortunately. In the last minute of extra time, Rako lost a goal and Slavia Braga advanced to the group stage. Raku, however, is not shy about it. In the aggregate match, at least until the 70th minute of Thursday’s game, he presented himself with dignity. Then the experience of the Czech team prevailed. In the end, a tired Raku had nothing to say, but the goal was only scored at the end of extra time.
Slavia began as promised high pressure and continuous attacks. But we saw exactly the same thing we saw a week ago. Nothing came of it at all. Defensive block Stratos Svarnas – Zoran Arsenic – Milan Rondić was flawless. The midfielders who play close to them leave no room for the Slavia players. Raku was waiting for his chance. When he carried out the operation, the hearts of local fans stopped. The one who was the biggest star of the first encounter, Evie Lopez – the Czechs had dubbed him “hvězdny Španěl” – hit the post.
Things became tense in Slavia. For a club that has reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League (twice) and the European Conference League in the past four seasons, not being promoted to the group stage is a disaster.
Raku sensed his opportunity and attacked more and more boldly. Matthews and Doviak hit the side nets in the second half of the match. There were two players from Slavia around Lopez. The Spaniard, although he did not have space, shot dangerously. And when he wasn’t, other Raków players quickly exchanged balls. Because in Aden – as the Slavia Stadium is called – there was no hopeless defense of Chistochova. After an hour of playing in the goal posts, it was 8:7 for Raku, and the runner-up was just behind the hosts.
But then flashed 20-year-old Musa Ussur, who has so far outstripped the Polish team’s defense that he scored a goal. The young player, who moved to the first team only this summer, did the most work for goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevich.
After the draw, Slavia began to play more calmly, but at the same time pushed Raku’s defense down more and more. There, arsenic patched holes. The Czechs completely controlled the field, exchanging the ball for a long time, looking for a way to break Rako’s defense, as happened in the 86th minute when Kovacevich again had to instinctively touch the ball after a close shot by Oscar Dorley. Ondřej Lingr had a good chance too, but the Bosnian was the winner again. In overtime, a tired Raków waited for the penalty kicks to take place, but he couldn’t see them.
Picker in the stands
The match aroused great interest not only among Czech fans. Polish coach Czeslaw Michnowicz was present at the podium. There were representatives from Zagłębie Lubin and Piast Gliwice as well as teams from the first league. They saw that with consistent work, a plan and patience in its execution, you can build a strong team not only in the country, but admired in Europe. This is how Raku presented himself in the draw against Slavia.
Raków’s players and staff did not return to Czestochowa after the match. It was decided to optimally prepare for Sunday’s clash with Silesia in Wroclaw. Therefore, Marek Babszon’s team will go to Lower Silesia by plane on Friday. Because cups are won, but you also have to keep an eye on Ekstraklasa. In the last two league matches, Raku scored only one point.

Nevertheless, a well-deserved youth coach and teacher can still be found in the stands of the stadium in Gdynia – he comes to the matches and his friends tell him what is happening on the field.
