Ecology - what is it and what does ecology do? What exactly do environmentalists do?

Ecology is a concept that accompanies us at every step in today’s reality. What does ecology do? We answer this question below.

Ecological products in stores, ecological packaging, ecological transportation – I think each of us hears these terms every day. However, it is worth knowing that Ecology is not an innovative “invention”. Contrary to popular belief, it is also not a way of life or a set of rules of behavior intended to make little impact on the environment.

today The term “ecology” is often used in a non-scientific context. While environmental awareness is very important, misuse of the term leads to a situation where a large part of society has a misunderstanding of its meaning and scope. Because the number of people who have permanently included this phrase in their dictionary understand that we are talking about one of the most respected lexicon. fields of biological sciences? We don’t have exact numbers on this, but we’re betting dollars for nuts that a large number of people are using incorrectly. So let’s find out What does ecology do?

Limit “EcologyIt was created from a combination of two Greek words – οἶκος (oíkos), which means “home” and λόγος (logos), which means “science”. It was introduced in the second half of the nineteenth century by Ernst Haeckel – a German biologist, philosopher and traveler .

When talking about ecology, one should mean biology. Ecology describes the relationships that exist between certain types of organisms and their living environment. The scope of this field also includes the study of phenomena that occur between individual organisms.

Ecology consists of several disciplines, such as:

  • Population – a specific group of representatives of a certain type of organism that interact and intersect with each other;
  • biogeocenosis – is a group of specific organisms that interact with each other;
  • vital – the natural environment in which there are specific groups of living organisms;
  • environmental system – is a group of selected organisms that occur in a particular natural environment, i.e. we are dealing here with a mixture of biogeocenosis and a bioenvironment;
  • biosphere It is the total area occupied by living things.

In short, ecology is the science that studies and explains the interactions between living things, the relationships between living organisms (i.e. biogeocenosis) and the abiotic environment in which they occur (i.e. the biotic environment), and the processes and phenomena that occur in biotic formations, ecosystems and the biosphere.

It is noteworthy that ecology is an interdisciplinary field that uses knowledge from other sciences, such as:

  • biogeography,
  • Geochemistry
  • Physiology
  • behavioral science
  • Zoology,
  • Genetics
  • Botany,
  • Evolutionism.

It all seems very complicated. Is it possible to simplify this concept? Yes, of course. A simple definition of the word “ecology”, ecology, indicates that science is the study of the structure and functioning of nature in a holistic manner.

as a science, Ecology focuses on different phenomena. This means that due to the scope of the phenomena studied and described, they should be divided into the following areas:

  • social ecology,
  • population environment,
  • behavioral ecology
  • Evolutionary Ecology
  • Synthesis
  • psychology.

Social ecology deals with placing selected individuals, who represent a particular type of organism, in an environment in which they do not occur naturally. This procedure allows you to know the dependencies and distinguish the characteristics of specific types.

Population ecology focuses on a select group of organisms. He studies her work and her numbers.

Behavioral ecology studies living organisms under new conditions. Thanks to this, it is possible to understand in detail the behavior of certain species.

Evolutionary ecology looks not only at the present but also at the past. It studies the history of the formation of selected species of living organisms and the changes that occurred in them during evolution.

Synecology deals with a group of selected organisms. It primarily studies their mutual interaction.

Subjective psychology studies living organisms that live in their natural environment. It primarily focuses on their development and work.

Other areas of ecology include:

  • Ecology of biocenoses – studies the influence of interactions between species on their structure and organization;
  • ecosystem environment – deals with the study of the circulation of matter and the flow of energy between the abiotic and biotic components that make up an ecosystem;
  • biosphere environment It deals with determining the effect of the circulation of matter and the flow of energy on the distribution and functioning of living organisms in the biosphere.

Since ecology is the subject of research, one must distinguish between ecology of aquatic environments and ecology of terrestrial environments. In terms of the studied taxonomic groups, a distinction is made between human ecology, animal ecology and plant ecology.

as you see, Ecology is a science that approaches the environment and the organisms that populate it in a comprehensive way. Because of the wide scope of research and observations, it is necessary to distinguish individual fields of ecology, each of which deals with something different. However, it can easily be seen that all environmental activities have one common denominator, which is the natural environment.

In order to be able to better understand who the ecologist is, it is first necessary to explain it Who is not an ecologist?. This concept does not apply to an activist who in protest is tied to a tree and thus prevents planned investments. Nor is he one who advocates for lifestyle changes and protests while holding a banner in his hand. Not a man who sorts waste and cleans forests and parks. Why do we mention this? Because An ecologist should not be confused with an environmental activist.

An ecologist is a scientist with a degree in biological and/or environmental sciences. It must be emphasized that ecology itself is usually studied as a discipline. As an aspiring scientist, the future ecologist must learn many topics and gain experience through project development and practice.

After graduation, the ecologist deals with the study and description of the phenomena and interactions that occur between the living and non-living components of the environment. The work of ecologists helps to understand the relationships that occur in nature. It concerns the interaction of living organisms and non-living elements.

Often you can meet opinions according to which the work of an ecologist has nothing to do with caring for the environment, and scientists themselves are most interested in obtaining grants, titles and recognition in their environment. Well, that’s hard to agree with.

It is important to know that the work of an ecologist is not just about “theorising” within the walls of universities and research institutes. That’s exactly Environmental scientists are involved in the work on renewable energy sources. It is they who determine the impact of industrial activities on the environment and their subsequent consequences. Environmentalists classify the types of animals and plants that must be protected. They make tunnels for animals that can migrate safely. It helps mark the path of roads with the least intrusion into the natural environment. They are engaged in work related to the modernization of almost all industries, helping to develop appropriate solutions.

Without the work of ecologists, we would not have even a tiny fraction of the current knowledge about the world around us, and the consequences of this could be very serious. It is necessary to realize that nature is like a continuum in which every link matters. The disappearance of one species could have dire consequences for others, and eventually for humans as well. Thanks to ecology, we understand these dependencies and can take actions aimed at maintaining a balance in nature.
