October 1, 2021 transit Gas Natural gas across the region Ukraine towards Hungary has been suspended”— We read in the announcement of the operator of the Ukrainian gas transportation system. He explained that “Conclusions Gas transit has not been received, despite the contract for capacity from Ukraine towards Hungary for the entire gas year (ie from 10/1/2021 to 9/30/2022) in the amount of 24.6 million meters cube per day.
The Ukrainian operator adds that “gas imports from Hungary took place via the hypothetical reverse”, and therefore “it is not possible to import from Hungary without transit”.
Hungary has been receiving gas through the territory of Ukraine for decades, and the Ukrainian side has never violated its obligations. Moreover, the Ukrainian route is the most profitable, as it is the shortest route for delivering gas to Hungary, as evidenced by the volume of trade between companies in both countries in recent years. Gazprom’s monopoly on gas roads, which we are currently witnessing, raises questions about the basic principles of functioning of the gas markets in the European Union, competitiveness and transparency. It is necessary to stop the consolidation of one player’s hegemony and its use of leverage for overt political purposes against the background of the shocking rise in gas prices in Europe.
– said OGTSU General Manager Sergey Makogon.
Naftogaz expects sanctions against Gazprom
The head of the Ukrainian oil company Naftogaz commented on the suspension of the transit of Russian gas to Hungary through Ukraine. “Russia Gas is used as a weapon, so the companies associated with Gazprom He should be subject to sanctions ”- said Yuri Vitrenko. He estimated that the suspension of transit poses a great threat to Ukraine and Europe. At the same time, he noted that both Germany and Europe Russia Gas transit as a weapon.
Yuri Vitrenko wrote that he therefore expected sanctions against the daughter company of Gazprom, which operates the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Ukraine disappointed with Hungary’s deal with Gazprom
On September 27, the government in Budapest signed a 15-year contract with Gazprom for the supply of natural gas. As we wrote in Next.gazeta.plGazprom will supply Hungary with 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually via two routes: 3.5 billion cubic meters from the south through Serbia, and the remaining billion cubic meters via Austria. The amount for which Russian gas was purchased was not specified.
Ukraine is frustrated by Hungary’s deal with Gazprom. On Monday, the official signing took place in Budapest with the participation of the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement that Kiev wants the contract to be examined by the European Commission.
As we read in the document, the Russian-Hungarian agreement is “politically motivated and has no economic justification.” As reported, “the decision on the agreement was made to please the Kremlin and would harm the interests of Ukraine and Ukrainian-Hungarian relations.”
According to Ukraine, it is profitable for Hungary to import gas through Ukraine. In response to the agreement, Kiev canceled the meeting of the intergovernmental commission headed by the heads of diplomacy of Ukraine and Hungary, which is scheduled to take place in the coming days. In addition, Ukraine will ask the European Commission to assess the agreement’s compliance with European energy law.
