In the wake of the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old girl who fell into a coma after being arrested by the Iranian religious police, riots erupted in Iran and a wave of indignation is spreading across Persian-speaking social media. The demonstration went out, Sunday, in front of Tehran University, and the day before in Saghiz in Iranian Kurdistan, where the woman came.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the case The death of Mahsa Amini After Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi demanded it, state media reported to Reuters. Police say the 22-year-old suffered heart problems while waiting with other women held at the morality police station. “There has been no physical contact with her since she was taken to the car and at the police station,” police said, rejecting allegations on social media that Amini was likely beaten.

But witnesses to the arrest in Tehran on Tuesday claimed that the woman was beaten by policemen in a police car. Amini’s family, quoting the BBC, explained that she was a healthy young woman who did not have any medical conditions that could explain the sudden heart problems.

A number of famous Iranians commented on Amini’s death via social media, and famous reformist politician Mahmoud Sadeghi on Twitter called on Iranian spiritual and political leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to speak frankly. He indicated that he condemned the killing of George Floyd at the hands of the American police in 2020.

US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley said on Twitter that “Mahasa Amini’s death after injuries in custody due to an inappropriate headscarf” is “horrific”. He pointed out that “those responsible for her death must be held accountable.”

In recent months, Iranian activists have encouraged women to remove their headscarves in public. Videos of other examples of religious police brutality against women began to be posted on social media.

Under Iranian Islamic law, imposed after the 1979 revolution, women are required to cover their hair and wear long, loose-fitting clothes to conceal their figure. Those who break the law face public reprimands, fines, or arrest.
