Japan. Typhoon Nanmadol is coming. An 'unprecedented' threat

Nanmadol, an unusually strong typhoon, is heading towards Japan. First, hit Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The danger posed by the natural force has forced meteorologists to issue a special kind of alert there. “The winds will be so strong that some houses may collapse,” meteorologist Ryota Korora warned.

Typhoon Nanmadol, whose strength corresponds to a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane, will hit the island of Kyushu first, and then head to Honshu – the main island of the archipelago. The element is expected to move ashore on Sunday. The JTWC Hurricane Warning Center classified it as a Super Typhoon. It may be the most devastating tropical cyclone to hit Japan in recent decades.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a special warning for Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu on Saturday. As the Japan Times explains, this is a kind of alert issued every few decades.

The 14th typhoon of the season struck about 170 kilometers east of the Japanese island of Minami Daito on Saturday. Wind gusts at a speed of 198 km / h and gusts of up to 270 km / h.

Evacuation order for tens of thousands of people, flight cancellations, store closures

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that an evacuation order had been issued in Kagoshima city for about 34,000 people. Hundreds of weekend flights to and from southern Japan have been cancelled. Some train lines were also canceled on Saturday.

Local media reported that grocery chain Seven-Eleven Japan plans to temporarily close 610 stores in Kyushu and Chugoku.

‘Some houses may collapse’

“There is a risk of unprecedented storms, high waves, flooding and record rainfall,” Ryota Koror, head of the JMA Forecasting Service, said at a press conference. “The winds will be so strong that some houses may collapse,” he stressed, also warning of landslides.

He warned that “extreme care must be taken” and urged residents to evacuate quickly on the grounds that it was a “very dangerous cyclone”.

In the southern part of Kyushu, during the rains on Sunday, up to 500 liters of water can fall per square meter, and in the Tokai region in the central part of the archipelago, the forecast is 300 l / square meter.

– If the item maintains its expected strength, it will be one of the five strongest stormssaid meteorologist and typhoon expert Robert Spita, which hit western Japan in history. He said the area east of Okinawa, where the typhoon was found, is “very favorable for rapid intensification.” He also added that the strength of the element could be affected by the above-average ocean surface temperature.

Japan is currently in the middle of typhoon season. About 20 storms of this type hit it every year.
