Welcome immigrants, mostly from Iraq, wanted to leave the refugee camp against the recommendations. The group tried to force its way through the gate. There was a mutiny, the guards took steps – the RMF FM reporter learned. The officers used tear gas and fired smooth-bore pistols into the air. Nothing happened to anyone.
Another reason for the events in al-Hijra camp is the arrest of Iraqis who made false statements about their asylum application.
Lithuania is full of illegal immigrants. These are mostly from the Middle East Lithuania across the green border with Belarus. The Lithuanian authorities set up a camping site because there are no other places in the camp premises for the migrants.
This year, more than 500 immigrants headed to Lithuania, which is six times more than it was a year ago. Most of them are citizens Iraq.
Interior Minister Ano Belutaito said that Belarus had deliberately relaxed its border protections with the European Union and that this was an attack on the Lithuanian state. According to her, this marked the beginning of a mixed war.
