Members of the Multidisciplinary Advisory Group on COVID-19, serving at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, received medals of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Nicholas Copernicus. These scientists monitor the epidemiological situation in Poland, follow possible scenarios and make recommendations – an academy spokesperson announced on Wednesday.
Awards will be received: a. Krzysztof Pyrć (Jagiellonian University), Dr. Magdalena Rosińska (National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Health, Dr. Tomasz Smiatacz (Medical University of Gdask), Dr. Aneta Afelt (University of Warsaw), Dr. Anna Ochab-Marcinek (Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences), Professor Radosław Owczuk (University of Gdansk Medical Center), Dr. Wojciech Paczos (Institute of Economics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Cardiff University), and Dr. Anna Blatter Zyberk (Office of International Relations of the Polish Academy of Sciences).
The Medal for Outstanding Scientific Achievement is awarded to scientists who have made a meritorious contribution to the scientific community in Poland, and who are not national members of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The laureates were honored for their participation in the work of the COVID-19 Multidisciplinary Advisory Panel at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences (operating from June 2020), the development of a compendium of knowledge about the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and COVID-19 disease, and the preparation of positions on various aspects of the pandemic COVID-19 – said a spokesman for the Polish Academy of Sciences, Piotr Karowski.
The team’s announcements are shaping the public debate about vaccines and the epidemic in Poland. So far, the team has published 22 detailed situations in which it made recommendations for public services and society at large. The team’s thirteenth position was presented in the United Nations report on the Science, Technology and Innovation Forum for Sustainable Development. This is the only voice from Poland. It offers lessons that we must do in order to get out of the epidemic as quickly as possible” – he pointed out.
In addition, in September 2020, a publication entitled “Understanding COVID-19. A study by the COVID-19 team at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences” was released, which presented in an accessible manner the current state of knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID- disease 19 and his medical, psychological and economic illness, social effects, epidemiological development expectations, and recommendations for citizens and institutions.
According to the spokesman, the decision to award the medals was made on September 21, and the awards were received on October 15.
Medal of the Polish Academy of Sciences Nicholas Copernicus was awarded by the Presidium of the Academy for outstanding scientific achievements to scientists who have meritoriously contributed to the scientific community in Poland, who are not national members of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The award was established in 1969, and to date more than 300 medals have been awarded.
An application for a medal can be submitted by the Academy’s faculty or by five members of the Academy. From the official point of view, the proposals are considered by the chapter presenting the recommendations of the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. (PAP)
