The Dutch Prosecutor’s Office announced his success a few days ago. She was supposed to arrest the head of the Italian mafia from Sicily. Matteo Messina Denaro, among others, was to be implicated in the high-profile murder of magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in Sicily in the early 1990s.
The arrest was made on the basis of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by Italy.
Until then, the detainee’s lawyer insisted that it wasn’t him and that something was wrong. Lawyer Leon Van Cleef told Het Parol daily that the prosecution erred and that his client was not a former mafia boss at all. The newspaper quoted the lawyer, “I informed the prosecution about this, but to no avail.”
On Saturday, it turned out he was right. The 54-year-old turned out to be a Formula 1 fan from Liverpool. According to the prosecutor’s office, he has already been released.
