Novak Djokovic admits there was a mistake. What's next for the Serbs? Will he play in the Australian Open?

Australian Open live from January 17th on Eurosport and at player.pl

Djokovic explained that there was an “administrative error” in his travel permit completed by his staff. By mistake, he said, tennis officials were asked to mark “no” when asked if he had traveled elsewhere in the 14 days prior to his arrival in Australia.

“It was a human error and certainly not on purpose,” the top tennis player emphasized. “We are living in difficult times of a global pandemic and such errors may arise at times.”

The Serbian, who is targeting a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam in Melbourne, added that his lawyers provided additional information to the Australian government on Wednesday to clarify the case.

Incorrectly completing a travel form or providing misleading information is a crime in Australia which can invalidate the offender’s visa because of a sentence of up to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to 6,600 Australian dollars (about 19,000 PLN).

What’s next for Djokovic?

Serb has not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19 and has not met the requirements of the organizers of the event, which will begin on January 17. He was exempted from this obligation on medical grounds, but after arriving in Australia on Wednesday evening, his visa was revoked, and he was taken directly from the airport to a hotel in a Melbourne suburb, where asylum seekers are also housed.

His lawyers appealed the authorities’ decision and a hearing was held on Monday, with Judge Anthony Kelly ordering the immediate release of Djokovic, who is being held at the hotel, and finding the decision to cancel his visa “unreasonable”.

A tennis visa can still be canceled. Your local immigration minister has the right to do so. A decision is due to be made on Wednesday.

Australia has a strict entry policy for foreigners – they must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, except for the medical exemption Djokovic provided, but his documentation has not been recognized.
