Odessa authorities said that two missiles were intercepted by the Ukrainian air defense, two hit residential areas, and two hit military targets.
The Prime Minister of the President of Ukraine, Andrei Yermak, said that the missiles were launched from the Caspian Sea by Russian Tu-95 strategic aircraft. The attack killed five people and wounded 18 others. “These are just the ones that have been found. Most likely there will be more of them,” he added in a post on social media.
Several videos appeared on the Internet showing a massive fire after the bombing in Odessa.
And local media reported that the missile hit an apartment building in an area of 3 to 4 floors and got stuck inside. According to preliminary information, the warhead of the missile did not explode.
“The only target of the Russian missile attacks on Odessa is terrorism. Russia must be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism and dealt accordingly. No interests, no contacts, no cultural projects. We need a wall between civilization and barbarians hitting quiet cities with missiles,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote.
Missile attack on Odessa. It is a city of strategic importance
With more than one million inhabitants, Odessa, located in the south of the country, is the third largest city in Ukraine. In this port on the Black Sea, direct battles with Russian troops have not yet taken place. The occasional missile attacks by invaders have not caused any serious damage to the city so far.
The Ukrainian civil and military authorities have been warning since the beginning of the Russian invasion (February 24) that Odessa may become the target of a hostile landing operation, which will be carried out using the warships of the Black Sea Fleet. On the night of April 19-20, Radio Soboda announced that the Russian missile cruiser Moscow, which was sunk by the Ukrainian army at the beginning of the month, was destined to play a key role in the planned landing of the Kremlin in Odessa.
