The first global design center in the field of design and everyday objects was built at the Opole University of Technology – this was stated by Professor PAP. Grzegorz Królczyk, Vice Chancellor for Science and Development at Opole University of Technology.
In less than half a year, Poland’s first knowledge center on accessibility and dissemination of universal design principles in design and everyday objects will start at Opole University of Technology.
“Universal design is about facing social exclusion. Products, in our case we are talking about everyday things, must be created in such a way that everyone can use them, regardless of whether they are appropriate or not” – explains the professor. Krolchik.
The center’s activity is an extension of existing activities that focus on removing barriers that limit access or usability of different types of facilities by persons with disabilities. The activity of the new center involves designing and creating new items in a way that these limitations do not exist.
“A universal design is one that focuses and at the same time takes into account the accessibility needs of all groups of beneficiaries, such as people with disabilities (eg those with eye or hearing disorders), but also with age-related limitations. These needs, which may take Various forms, such as simple things, including the fitting shape of the coffee cup handle or the shape of the end of the appliance wire, so that it can be easily pulled out of the socket, should be something that is clear in the terms of these needs. It pays off as our society is aging “- said the project leader Dr. Michel Bohm from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Opole University.
The project has already received support in the amount of 2.5 million PLN from the National Research and Development Center. The university partners in Opole are the Pedagogical University of Krakow and the Krakow University of Technology.
The main objective of the center’s activity is, above all, to raise the awareness and competence of the university’s staff, as well as to cooperate with the social and economic environment in the field of public design in the field of design and everyday objects. In addition to training activities, the project provides for the introduction of the topic “General Design” to study networks in areas related to industrial design. (PAP)
