German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that she would hold further talks with the US government on the North Stream 2 gas pipeline.
– There will definitely be further discussions and talks with Americans about Nord Stream 2 – Merkel said during the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels on Tuesday.
On May 20, the US State Department announced in a statement to Congress that it would not impose sanctions on the company that built NS2 – NortStream AG and its boss, Matthias Warnick. It was driven by reasons of national interest. This decision provoked criticism from US lawmakers.
On Saturday, it was announced that several ships and companies involved in construction and the Russian Maritime Rescue Service would be subject to sanctions by the U.S. Treasury.
The two-pipe connection is now almost complete. Construction is opposed, with Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states insisting that the completion of the project would increase reliance on gas imports from Europe and Russia and expand the Kremlin’s political influence.
