A local vegetable basket is about 13 percent more expensive than last year. Maciej Kemera, a wholesale market expert in Bruneisse, noted that the weather, especially the cold nights, did not help the plants catch up with the delays in the spring. There are still a few strawberries left for this time of year, and Polish cherries are lacking.
Maciej Kemera noted that the delay in vegetation usually reaches two weeks, and in the case of some vegetables – up to a month. Hence – as an expert at the wholesale market in Bronisze explained – the prices of local vegetables have risen and risen in the last year.
Compared to the lists since the beginning of June 2020, the prices of white and red cabbage last year, Chinese cabbage, parsley, celery and shallots increased the most. On average, a household vegetable basket is about 13 percent. More expensive than last year. However, if we take into account all domestic and imported fruits and vegetables listed on the wholesale market in Bruneis, the value of the basket (as of June 2) increased by 4% compared to the prices of the previous year. – Followed by Kmera accounts.
Many buyers of vegetables and fruits think they are too expensive this year. According to Macej Kemera, such feelings may stem from the fact that sellers want to compensate for losses caused by the pandemic restrictions. Prices are determined by margins and it is possible to look for reasons for price hikes here.
As he pointed out, the market is showing a slow recovery in trade, but there is still a slight oversupply of young local vegetables. In recent days, new domestic potatoes have fallen sharply, currently their cost is from 2.3 to 3.5 PLN / kg. Price depends on variety and caliber. For comparison, a year ago, its price was on average 1.5 PLN / kg.
Butter lettuce fell below PLN 2 / piece, and green beans prices fell significantly from PLN 40 to PLN 22-25 / kg. The first domestic shipments of broccoli, exceptionally late – for a month – are priced at 4-5 PLN / kg. The price of tomatoes has stabilized at the level of 3-5 zlotys / kg. Field option prices decreased from PLN 6.5 / kg to PLN 3.5 / kg.
Chimera noticed that it was high season for asparagus. This year, the market mainly offers green asparagus, which is more popular than white asparagus. Its price varies between 8-14 PLN / kg. This year is a little cheaper than last year.
The supply of the first domestic fruit of the season – strawberries – is constantly increasing. Now, fruits are sold from foil covers and non-woven fabrics, and the price drops to 4-12 PLN / kg – depending on the variety and sorting criterion. However, in shops or in markets and markets of the capital, Polish strawberries will have to pay 16-20 PLN per kilogram. Despite such high prices, strawberries “sell” without much problems.
The appearance of strawberries reduces the demand for apples, and, accordingly, lower prices for this fruit – noted the expert on the wholesale market in Bronisze.
Polish sweet cherry is not yet available for sale, and in previous years it was possible to buy early varieties of it. However, there are Serbian and Spanish cherries in the wholesale market. Its price is 12-18 PLN / kg. The new, “exotic” direction of importing this fruit is Kazakhstan, where cherries from this country cost 22-26 PLN / kg.
There are more and more watermelons, the price of which is from 2.8 to 3.6 zlotys / kg, and the demand for them is lower than in previous years, due to a decrease in demand caused by spring and not summer weather.
