President Vladimir Putin said that the United States faced the usual problems of the empire – relying on its own power, which created problems that could no longer be overcome like the Soviet Union. “He did not expect any improvement,” he added during a meeting with Fiden in Geneva.
Putin made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of global news organizations on Friday as part of the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg.
– Do you know what the problem is? As a former citizen of the former Soviet Union I am going to tell you about it. The problem with empires is that they think they are so powerful that they can tolerate small mistakes and flaws. We will buy them, frighten them, treat them, give them drinkets, and threaten them with warships. Putin said it would solve the problems.
– But problems abound. There comes a point when you can no longer deal with them. The United States is following in the footsteps of the Soviet Union, he added.
Putin said he expected the upcoming meeting with US President Joe Biden in Geneva to be “in a favorable situation”, although he did not “expect any progress”. The two leaders are expected to meet on June 16 in Geneva.
The Russian president also speculated that US sanctions against Russia were triggered by US domestic political rivalries, but that they were “mysterious” for Russia.
The United States is openly trying to control Russia, he said.
