Sony PlayStation 5 – The new console review is better than the previous ones. This is largely due to the updated SoC at 6 nm

Sony PlayStation 5 - nowa rewizja konsoli wypada lepiej od poprzednich. Duża w tym zasługa odświeżonego SoC w 6 nm [1]

Recently, Sony is sending a new version of the PlayStation 5 console to stores. From the very beginning, it is known that the manufacturer made more savings in it, which means that the whole thing is, for example, a little lighter than before. In any case, the most important thing for gamers is the operation of the console, but fortunately all fears turned out to be unfounded. The new PS5 console with CFI-1202 designation turned out to be better than the previous versions.

It turns out that the PlayStation 5 CFI-1202 version has a new AMD Oberon Plus processor. The chip is manufactured in the 6 nm technological process, which provides, among other things, low energy consumption and lower temperatures.

Sony PlayStation 5 – A new version of the console with a detachable Blu-ray drive may be released next year

As noted in Austin Evans’ latest taped version (at the bottom of the news), the latest PlayStation 5 is highly recommended. The CFI-1202 console is lighter, cooler and uses less power than its predecessors, although it is louder (~45dB). As it turned out, the console’s good performance is due to the use of the new AMD Oberon Plus processor. This chip is as efficient as the previous Oberon, but was produced using a new 6nm EUV (6N) process. This process ensures that the density of transistors increases by 18.8%, reduces power consumption and also reduces chip temperatures. Moreover, the 6nm process is fully compatible with the 7nm lithography used previously, so the manufacturer should have no problems producing the chips in a newer, more energy efficient version.

AMD Oberon Plus (6 nm) vs. AMD Oberon (7 nm)

The new array has an area of about 260 mm², which is approximately 15% smaller than its predecessor, and was produced using 7 nm (~300 mm²) lithography. Another advantage of downgrading to a lower process is the increased production capacity. It is assumed, at the same costs, that the manufacturer will produce up to 20% more chips. This means that Sony should no longer have problems connecting the correct number of consoles. It has already been reported that in the near future TSMC will withdraw production of 7nm Oberon chips and will switch entirely to 6nm Oberon Plus modules. Thus, it will be possible to produce up to 50% more chips than the same silicon wafer. Microsoft is also expected to make a similar move, and Xbox Series X consoles will soon receive an updated Arden 6nm chip. Unfortunately, despite the greater production capacity, it is difficult to count on lower prices for consoles today.
