Visible Comet Leonard (C/2021 A1) lit up in the December sky fast, told Carol Wojcicki, astronomy promoter and author of the blog With His Head in the Stars. Thanks to this, under favorable conditions, after sunset, we can see it from Poland.
Leonard (C / 2021 A1) is a so-called single-appearance comet, that is, it appears only once near the Sun. It is the first discovery in 2021.
As Carol Wojcicki, promoter of astronomy and author of the blog With Its Head in the Stars declared Thursday, “After turning into the evening sky, (the comet) brightened sharply.” “Although its glare is currently hovering around +2.5 degrees, the conditions for its observation are very difficult,” he added. Magnitude is a stellar quantity, a unit of measure used to indicate the brilliance of stars.
Wójcicki reports that the comet is now visible from Poland shortly after sunset over the southwest horizon. “The comet will be visible against the background of a still bright sky, and if it were not for the rapid increase in brightness, it would probably not have been possible to detect it at all” – he emphasized.
Star of Bethlehem in the sky
When a comet appears in the sky, it leaves behind a distinctive glow, known as a cue. Since the time coincides with Christmas, this phenomenon is generally known as the Star of Bethlehem.
The best conditions for observing a comet are clear skies and no air pollution. It is better to choose a place away from sources of artificial light, that is, as far from the city or industrial facilities as possible.
