Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the decision to suspend the activities of the Russian mission in NATO and the alliance’s office in Moscow was dictated by “NATO’s position, which makes it impossible to conduct effective diplomacy” on the Russian side. The politician referred to recent events related to NATO’s decision to expel eight Russian diplomats from the mission in Brussels. It turns out they are secret intelligence agents. The Kremlin then rejected the allegations and stated that the diplomats had not conducted any covert operation. In addition, the coalition authorities decided to reduce the number of credits available to Russian representatives from 20 to 10 from the end of October.
NATO authorities expressed concern about Russia’s decision. A spokeswoman for Oana Lungescu reiterated that NATO is not seeking confrontation with Russia. At the same time, the alliance will react to any manifestation of Russia’s aggressive stance aimed at the security of the organization and the countries that make up it.
Relations between NATO and Russia are currently at their worst point since the end of the Cold War. For us, there is no argument against dialogue
– Secretary-General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg explains this. He added that the decision to expel eight Russian diplomats was absolutely correct, because the organization has significant evidence of its espionage activities.
The Kremlin sees no problem
The Russian authorities, their supportive media, and experts all agree that the decision to withdraw the diplomatic mission to NATO was only a matter of time. Commenting on the matter, the Russian media noted that the mission “died” many years ago. It was recalled that mutual communication still exists (and even in a very tense atmosphere) in the military sphere, specifically between the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Marek Milley.
We’ve said so many times that you can’t tango alone and we won’t
– Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented clearly in the context of the Kremlin’s recent actions towards NATO.
It’s bad, and it’s going to get worse
It is hard to disagree with NATO President Jens Stoltenberg’s words that relations between NATO and Russia are the worst since the Cold War. The decisive point was 2014. And the Russian aggression against Ukraine and Crimea, which led to the occupation of the peninsula belonging to Ukraine by Russian forces and mercenaries, terrorizing the local population and forcing them to accept Russian citizenship. The following years were other provocations of Russia targeting NATO, both at the traditional and hybrid (network attacks). As a result, the security situation in Central and Eastern Europe is very tense. There is no indication that it will improve in the coming months or even years.
Communication between Russia and NATO is very important. Keeping diplomatic channels open is key to reducing tensions and the potential for misjudgment of the other’s actions
– says in an interview with the independent brigade. John Grunsky, former U.S. Deputy Commander of the U.S. Land Forces in Europe National Guard.
By closing an important path of dialogue with NATO, Russia contributes to increasing threats in the security environment
– Our interlocutor added.
In a recent conversation with The Independent, Prof. Bowie Soroka of Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce.
Russia’s suspension of representation in NATO worsens the climate and security in relations in Europe and in transatlantic relations. This is annoying, and there may be a harbinger of some radical steps behind it
The expert noted.
Next steps discussed by Prof. Soroka, you have already taken. The Head of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, informed the Faculty of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in Moscow that Minsk and Moscow had signed a protocol to extend the work of Russian military facilities in Belarus. The document concerns, inter alia, the following: the deployment of Russian military facilities on the territory of the Republic of Belarus – the missile attack warning system node in Baranovichi and the Naval Radio Station in Velika.
According to Sergei Shoigu, NATO is building weapons and ammunition near ZBiR, that is, the union state of Belarus and Russia, and is expanding military logistics.
The number of exercises with the participation of countries outside the alliance has increased, and the number of NATO soldiers on our borders is constantly increasing
He also added, the amended document will soon be signed by the presidents of the two countries – Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko.
The Russian government is sensitive not only to the activity of the Alliance near its borders, but also to actions aimed at expanding the structures of the Alliance with new countries. The prospect of Ukraine joining NATO is of particular concern in the Kremlin.
[Z naszego punktu widzenia] This would be a very dangerous step for Moscow to respond to
– said Deputy Head of Russian Diplomacy Andrei Rudenko.
It is worth noting that at NATO headquarters in Brussels, there is a two-day summit of defense ministers of member states with the participation of among others. Minister Marius Paschak. During the first session of the talks, participants discussed further enhancements to Allied deterrence and defense capabilities, including in our region. There will be a session of the North Atlantic Council on Friday with representatives of the European Union and NATO partners, Sweden and Finland, on common challenges to European security.
