During chronic stress, hormones are released into the body, which are usually designed to stimulate the body and provide strength. They are not bad per se. However, it is satisfactory when its high levels persist for a very long time. Then the balance is disturbed. As a result, all organs slowly begin to feel the effects of chronic stimulation with hormones – cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine, as well as prolactin. This, in turn, leads to their faster aging and many health ailments – explains endocrinologist Siluja Konyarz-Remars from the Sublimed Clinic in Krakow.
All roads lead to the heart
The main effect of adrenaline and noradrenaline is the cardiovascular system. In fact, this system is the most important, because given the most common causes of death today, we are largely dying from cardiovascular diseases – heart attacks or strokes. The action of these hormones causes the blood vessels to constrict, which leads to an increase in blood pressure and an increase in the heart rate caused by adrenaline. And often this is not diagnosed for a long time, because headaches are sometimes underestimated and blamed on fatigue and exhaustion – the doctor explains.
Prolactin affects a woman’s fertility. When its secretion is affected by chronic stress, menstrual disorders, anovulatory cycles and the problem of excess male hormones in the body appear.
Cortisol produced by the adrenal cortex is called the stress hormone. In a properly functioning organism, it has, inter alia, the effect on the correct circadian rhythm. In the morning, its level is at its highest, which helps us wake up. In the evening it goes down, allowing you to sleep peacefully. However, due to prolonged stress, this pattern can be disturbed. This, in turn, leads to insomnia, physiological stress decreases and the body becomes calm at night. Also for other diseases.
The visible effect of cortisol is the effect on the level of glucose and lipids, as well as the accumulation of adipose tissue, which also contributes to the development of carbohydrate disorders and, ultimately, diabetes. Due to the fact that it participates in lipid metabolism, it will accelerate the development of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. Due to the fact that cortisol physiologically affects the distribution of adipose tissue and the deposition of fat in the abdominal area, abdominal obesity will also be a consequence of this. And back to the starting point – atherosclerosis, ischemic disease, diabetes – all diseases of civilization – the endocrinologist explains.
There are also digestive problems, stomach acidity, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine headaches. A large group of difficulties that hinder life and simply shorten it. The body must use the resources available to it, which are limited. This is not a bottomless well.
Oxidative stress causes cell damage and changes in DNA, causing the aging process to occur faster. Free radicals and toxins that are produced – all this makes us age. A person under such stress falls into a vicious circle – we begin to hurt ourselves because we focus on the factor causing stress and do not pay attention to ourselves. So we don’t take any steps to help our bodies, but we continue to do so, says the expert.
Long-term stress. Stop the wagon of destruction
We already know that long-term stress is definitely something to avoid. Especially when you are a woman after your 40th birthday, when your body is less resistant to diseases and ailments. This is the perfect time to give yourself a gift and finally relax a bit. A gift for the soul, but also for the body. where do I start? It is preferable to examine the conscience. Ask yourself the question: how do I live, do I want to live like this and what can I do to jump out of this “hamster wheel” full of responsibilities, difficulties and anxieties, which often can be eliminated relatively easily?
It is well known that there are situations beyond our control, but the question of our position is how we will perceive it. Often it is necessary to work through something with a therapist, because it is impossible to overcome a severe and incurable disease, but you can look at it differently, open to sources of help from the outside, pay attention to the way I live, how I eat or do sports, do I have a pet – find a starting point and re-evaluate my life, wondering if some things are worth it. It is known that it is difficult to change your profession and job, but you can change your attitude towards it. So I will look for such changes in the field of work, in emotional readiness for change – the expert advises.
An important positive change that you can make in your daily life to free yourself from the vicious cycle of chronic stress is also a change in your diet. It is important to eat, not to eat. Do not lose yourself in various duties, instead of eating a meal in peace, eat appropriate amounts of antioxidants – fruits and vegetables. They are our natural and anti-free radical remedies.
The endocrinologist also recommends that you slow down, stop looking for other forms of work, as if you can not stand laziness and rest. It’s not like you have to rush somewhere all the time. On the contrary, after the age of forty, the spirit of slow life is more important than ever. And the life mode certainly makes it easy to jump on this quieter path, because kids are usually already brought up. The race is over.
– You have to learn to be good to yourself and listen to what your body tells us – explains Sylwia Kuźniarz-Rymarz. – And treat the doctor not as an enemy but as a partner, and examine yourself. If a doctor recommends a breast ultrasound and cytology, it is not because he is malignant, but because he wants to protect us from the most common diseases that lead to death, such as breast and cervical cancer. Prevention and pro-health behavior will have to find a place in our calendar at some point. Many diseases that we initially detect or prevent from developing will not disturb our health or will be cured and we will live on.
There are still many springs ahead of us
Humans are programmed to live 100 years. In practice, the average is 80 springs, so the 40th birthday is the midpoint. The other half remained to live. This can be done correctly. Better than before. Fortunately, more and more women are realizing that this is a good idea. They begin to realize that youth does not last forever, so they must take care of themselves in order to last as long as possible.
as? There are several ways. First of all, it is protection and a calmer life, and secondly – everything that makes you happy and gives you a break. Yoga, Walking, Meditation and Mindfulness Techniques. or courses such as pottery or cooking. Or painting workshops combined with the consumption of high-quality red wine. Because after forty, there comes a time when life is worth living in the best possible way. No rush, no eternal insult. It’s time to take care of yourself and pamper yourself at every step. Because the coming decades are waiting for us and it is worth living in health and wellness. And necessarily without chronic stress.
– The biology speaks for itself – the period of growth of the organism is over, a large percentage of women have given birth to children, so their childbearing period is delayed. As we get closer to menopause, our sex hormones start releasing in lower amounts. We are aging in small steps. It can be a good and quiet old age. The future is in our hands.
