For the first time in history, a black trance cheerleader will perform in American football at the NFL’s largest professional league.
Justin Lindsay, a 29-year-old black transgender woman, cheerleaded for the “Top Gates” of the Carolina Panthers and became the first transgender cheerleader in the NFL for the American Football Professional League. Lindsay will make its debut in September 2022, as she announced on her Instagram in March of this year.
“I would like to thank the dancers, my family and friends (…) who have supported me for your love. Without support I would not have reached this stage in my life. (…) I will not forget and can not wait to show you everything I have to offer. “Thanks Topgates, the dream has come true,” he wrote.
Following the news of joining the “TopCats” group, Lindsay was interviewed by BuzzFeed. In it, he spoke about the emotions that came with him when he released the entry on IG. The cheerleader admitted that he was “terrified” just because there were things you could not publish.
Although Lindsay received numerous congratulatory messages and support votes, she has experienced transphobic comments and harassment on social media. In one of his posts, he decided to mention them. On Monday, June 6, he wrote, “Thanks to all my haters who think I’m failing in the system, obviously not.”
“The Carolina Panthers are a great organization that supports all people: white, black, yellow, trans, straight,” he added, and will encourage others to act. Transgender people. “So please remember your habits, and if you can not say anything well, keep it to yourself,” she concluded.
The organization that hired him also noted Lindsay’s negative comments. “Lindsay is on the team because of her talent as a dancer,” he said, adding that “all TopCats members are hired based on their qualifications and abilities”, regardless of age, race, religion, color, disability, gender, sexual orientation or appearance.
As we read on the website “The Guardian”, black cheerleaders are a minority in the NFL, just like the men who were first hired for cheerleading positions in 2018.
