Australian airline Qantas has announced the launch of a direct line from Sydney to London in 2025. It will be the longest passenger flight in the world. The journey from Australia to the United Kingdom takes 20 hours.
Qantas announced Monday that it has ordered 12 Airbus A350-1000s – designed for long-haul flights, which will allow direct flights from Sydney on Australia’s east coast to London and New York.
The longest air connection in the world
The planes ordered by the Australian airline will carry 238 passengers, more than 40 per cent. Among them are First Class, Business Class and Premium Economy Class. Thus, Airbus configured for Qantas will carry fewer total passengers than the same machines produced by competing airlines.
Reuters reports that due to higher fuel prices and fewer passengers taken on board, direct flights will only be profitable if you can sell enough more expensive tickets in higher categories. He adds that the airlines have yet to provide a price list for future connections.
Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, noted that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying travel restrictions, demand for long-distance, direct flights has increased. Qantas already offers flights from London to Darwin in Western Australia. It is one of the longest regular air connections in the world.
Flight tests from London and New York
Connectivity tests conducted in 2019. In November of this year, a Boeing 787-9 (Dreamliner) traveled 17.8 thousand kilometers from London to Sydney in 19 hours 19 minutes. The plane flew over Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, the Philippines and Indonesia, and about 50 people were transported, including four pilots. A test flight from New York to Sydney took place a month earlier.
The aim of the tests – under the project called “Sunrise” – was to introduce the network of direct flights between Sydney and London as well as Sydney and New York. Originally, it was supposed to take place in 2022.
