The status of the historical monument is determined by a regulation issued by the President of the Republic of Poland at the request of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The content of the document lists the features of the monument that prove its special value.

In the Presidential Decree Recognizing the History of the Former Ministry of Religious Communities and Public Enlightenment Building as a Monument, we read that the purpose of the protection “is to preserve historical, artistic, scientific and authentic values, the building which is an outstanding model of public architecture in the interwar period, with its well-preserved decoration and interior design, And at the same time a symbol of the martyrdom of the Polish nation, which was a prison and headquarters of the secret office of the political police of the Third Reich – the Gestapo during the Second World War. ”

Historic building of the former Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education in Aleja Szucha 25

The building of the Ministry of Religious Communities and Public Education was built in the years 1927-1930 on the basis of a design by the Professor of Architecture and at the same time Head of the School Building Department of the Ministry of Religious Communities and Public Education, Zdzisław Mączeński. The architecture of the building is distinguished by high material standards and a strict classical formula, included in the so-called reductionist classicism. The interior of the building was designed by Wojciech Jastrzębowski, a professor at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, who together with a group of young artists created beautiful and unique spaces in the Art Deco style.

The building was officially consecrated on December 19, 1930 by Cardinal Aleksandr Kakovsky. The ceremony was also attended by the then Prime Minister, Walery Sawik, and Minister of Religious Communities and Public Education, Swamir Cherwinsky.

The building of the Ministry of Religious Communities and Public Education was the first newly built ministerial seat in the Second Polish Republic, and is dedicated to an office covering all types and levels of education, care for sciences, literature and art, archives, libraries, reading rooms, museums and theatres. The then Minister of Education was also responsible for carrying out the state’s tasks in religious affairs.

After the outbreak of World War II, al. Szucha found herself in the middle of the so-called police district, which had the status of “for Germans only”, and was renamed Strasse der Polizei (ul. Policjska). In turn, the Ministry building was converted into the headquarters of the Gestapo. The building houses the office of the Chief of Security Police and the Warsaw District Security Service. The rooms on the ground floor and ground floor were converted into the Gestapo Detention Center, where prisoners brought in from Boweck and captured during street arrests were interrogated.

The building survived the turmoil of war as it is, and after the end of hostilities, the Ministry of Education was able to return to its headquarters in LG. Socha 25.

The management of the Ministry of Education and Science appreciates the unique artistic value of the building and has been working for many years to restore the original interior furniture and furnishings. In cooperation with the Capital Conservator of Monuments, it aims to recreate the uniqueness of one of the most “Warsaw” buildings in the capital – not only by the history of its tragic occupation, but also by the fact that its creation was the result of the work of people and companies closely connected with Warsaw.

Currently, the building is an example of well-preserved reductive classical architecture characteristic of the interwar period. The interior of the building is still one of the most remarkable achievements of the decorative art of the interwar period.
