Robert Wood, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Disarmament Conference in Geneva, said Tuesday that China opposes bilateral talks with the United States on nuclear weapons.
“Despite the dramatic increase in the nuclear arsenal of the People’s Republic of China, unfortunately it continues to oppose bilateral talks with the United States on nuclear risk mitigation,” US Ambassador Robert Wood said during a virtual session of the Disarmament Conference.
– So far, Beijing is not ready to engage or establish substantial expert discussions, as we do with Russia. We really hope this changes, “said Tariq al-Hashimi, the party’s secretary general.
US and Russia extend new START agreement
Russia and the United States have agreed this year to extend a new five-year agreement on measures to further reduce and control strategic weapons.
Russian and US presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden are expected to discuss arms control and security issues at a June meeting. Robert Wood said on Tuesday that he hoped such bilateral talks would form the basis of future nuclear disarmament and future arms control agreements.
