US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the postponement of a Minuteman III ICBM test scheduled for this week to avoid escalating tensions with China, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The newspaper cited sources in the Pentagon. According to the quoted official, the US military was to conduct a missile test at the Californian Vandenberg base.
“Supervisor to avoid misunderstandings
“This was a long-planned test, but was postponed to avoid confusion due to the PRC’s actions around Taiwan,” the WSJ correspondent said, referring to Chinese military exercises, including missile launches over Taiwan, in response to Chamber’s visit. US Representative in Taipei Nancy Pelosi is the announcer.
As the newspaper recalled, Austin made a similar decision — to postpone a routine missile test — in March, shortly after the Russian president announced that its strategic forces were on high alert.
