China condemned the mission, saying its forces had “warned off” the ships.
In recent years, US warships, and sometimes warships from allies such as Britain and Canada, have routinely crossed the strait, drawing China’s ire.
In a statement, the US Navy announced that its destroyer – the Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy frigate – Vancouver had passed through a strait corridor beyond the territorial sea of any state.
“Cooperation like this is at the heart of our approach to a secure and prosperous region,” the Navy statement added.
Canada’s Defense Minister Anita Anand said that as a Pacific country, her country is deeply committed to upholding global stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Today’s routine in the Taiwan Strait demonstrates our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” he said.
It was the second such move by a US Navy ship in a month, and the second joint US-Canada passage in less than a year — the last occurring in October 2021.
