In the updated guidelines, the State Department also recommended that all those at the airport “remove to a safe place and await further guidance.” As he wrote, there is a “persistent and high risk of a terrorist attack”, road travel is “extremely dangerous” and there are reports of “mistreatment” of people heading to airports.
On Wednesday afternoon, Sky News, citing a senior British source, said there was a “very high risk of a terrorist attack” during an evacuation at Kabul airport by the US, UK and other Western countries. According to this source, the biggest concern is the Afghan branch of the Islamic State called the Islamic State of Khorasan (ISIS-K).
The US Embassy in Kabul advised US citizens not to travel to Hamid Karzai International Airport, and advised those at the airport to leave immediately.
Americans already at Abbey Gate, East Gate and North Gate were advised to leave the airport immediately. The warning posted on the embassy’s website did not say why it was issued.
The warning came after US President Joe Biden and other administration officials warned that the Islamic State group was threatening the evacuation.
The warning reminds Americans to “always be aware of their surroundings, especially in large crowds.”
