The intense, distinctive flavor and spicy aroma of horseradish makes it difficult to confuse it with another spice plant. It has always been associated with Polish culinary traditions – without them it is difficult to imagine a delicious pickled cucumber or red beetroot. It is a mandatory addition to Easter dishes. However, it is worth getting to it more often than on holidays, because the list of its advantages is really impressive!

It is not entirely clear where horseradish comes from and how it became popular among culinary gourmets. Its way into our tables is long and probably goes back to ancient Egypt, where the radish root was valued for health reasons. Radish doses were supposed to cure many diseases – from respiratory infections to parasitic infections of the digestive system. The huge leaves of the plant were used to keep food from spoiling. In ancient Europe, radish was popular, but it was not very popular. He appeared around the eleventh century – in his treatise on healing and the harmful effects of plants and minerals, the saint mentioned it. Hildegard of Bingen. In the 15th century, it was used in Danish and German, and later in English cuisine, especially to season fish sauce. The situation changed only in the 19th century, when its values ​​were appreciated by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph. Historians say that he recommended the addition of horseradish to almost all meat dishes and – perhaps – thanks to the plant – lived healthy for 90 years. Today it is difficult to find a cookbook that does not contain even a few recipes with this aromatic root. The sharp and strong aroma of horseradish adds to the dishes, warms them, makes fatty and heavy dishes easier to digest. It goes well with cold cuts, eggs and meats. Pork knuckle, pork neck or braised beef with the addition of horseradish creates a wonderful feast for the palate. But there is more!

Not just for digestion

Radishes are a must-have in the kitchen for anyone who appreciates natural ways to stay healthy. Prevents seasonal infections and strengthens the body. It fights bacteria that can cause a runny nose, cough and flu, as well as inflammation of the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract. It is useful in treating sinus problems, and helps treat rheumatic pain and digestive disorders. These properties of hot radish are due to the presence of synigrin – a substance responsible for its characteristic taste. Researchers emphasize its properties as an antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, fungicidal, and bactericidal. But not only! Thanks to him, radish stimulates appetite, improves metabolism and digestion. In addition, it perfectly warms you. Our grandmothers already knew that compresses made from grated horseradish are an excellent remedy for joint pain. In alternative medicine, they are used for back and waist pain, neuralgia, radiculitis or sciatica. In the form of a syrup, horseradish acts as an expectorant and is useful for annoying coughs. On the other hand, inhaling the essential oils hovering over fresh grated horseradish clears sinus obstruction.

A treasury of valuable ingredients

Horseradish root also provides a large dose of vitamins and minerals. It contains a large amount of vitamin C, vitamin B, provitamin A and minerals such as potassium, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, manganese, sodium, zinc, sulfur, phosphorous, iodine and chlorine. We also find in it flavonoids, essential oils, sugars, enzymes and fiber. It is good to know that cooked radish loses many components (particularly vitamin C) and therefore it is recommended to eat it raw.

When using a hot radish remedy, remember that you can eat no more than 4 teaspoons (about 40 g) of grated radish per day – in larger quantities it can irritate the kidneys, mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines.
