White House spokeswoman Jen Psi said on Wednesday that Russia’s allegations that the United States was behind the mass protests in Kazakhstan were “insane and utterly false and part of Russia’s misinformation.” He called on the protesters to remain calm.
“We have seen some frantic Russian claims that the United States is behind this (ie in Kazakhstan – PAP) protests, so I would like to take this opportunity to say that this is completely false and part of the latest Russian misinformation.” – Zaki said in response to a question at a press conference.
The spokesman stressed that the United States was monitoring the situation and that “protesters must peacefully defeat their views and the authorities must restrain themselves.”
Mass protests are taking place in several cities in Kazakhstan, the direct cause of which is the rise in LPG prices. On Wednesday, protesters stormed an airport in the former capital, Almaty, and demolished one of the monuments to Kazakhstan’s longtime leader Narsultan Nazarbaye. President Kasym-martomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government, which was demanded by the protesters, and on Wednesday introduced a state of emergency across the country. (PAP)
