Everyone sneezes several times a day and often doesn’t even realize it. Sneezing is a physiological activity that cleans the airways of pollutants. This applies to everyone, not only adults, but also children.
However, when a toddler starts sneezing, red lights flash in the parents’ heads. And rightly so, because sneezing can have many causes, and for these young children, no symptoms should be taken lightly.
What does it mean if a baby sneezes?
A variety of pollutants accumulate in your child’s nasal passages. This could be leftovers (especially when a child eats a lot and it rains), dust, or contamination. Sneezing clears your nose and makes breathing easier. In such a case, you don’t have to worry about it at all.
However, when sneezing is accompanied by other symptoms, such as irritability, drowsiness, lack of appetite or a runny nose, sneezing may mean the onset of infection.
Causes of sneezing in a baby
Sneezing in an infant could be a sign of:
- nose cleansing
- Respiratory obstruction due to food residues
- inhalation sensitivity
- food allergy
- upper respiratory infections
When is it necessary to see a doctor?
Take the child to the doctor if there are other signs of infection. In the case of a cold, there is usually nasal discharge, low-grade fever, cough or lack of appetite the next day. In such a case, you need to visit a pediatrician who will listen to your child and recommend the appropriate treatment.
If sneezing is not accompanied by any symptoms, but is very common, it may be an allergy. In this case, skin changes often appear, such as a rash or spots, as well as watery or red eyes. It is also worth going to the pediatrician, because, perhaps, the young child is allergic to cow’s milk proteins or other products, which implies the introduction of a diet to eliminate the disease in a nursing mother. The doctor can also prescribe ointments and skin care products to relieve itching and redness.
