Chinese officials plan to hold a meeting with the US president on Xi Jinping’s visit to Southeast Asia. A conversation between the leaders of the two most important world powers could take place in November – “The Wall Street Journal” reports
If the Chinese officials’ plans succeed, it would be the first in-person meeting between the two politicians since Joe Biden took office.
Officials involved in preparations for the visit told the newspaper that the Chinese leader is expected to first brief the party congress and then attend the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia on November 15-16.
From there, G. went to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.
According to the “WSJ” report, preliminary preparations are already underway for a possible meeting between Xi Jinping and Biden on the sidelines of one of the two summits.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to the US newspaper’s questions about Xi Jinping’s possible visits, saying only that “China supports Indonesia and Thailand as host countries for the two summits and is ready to cooperate with all parties.”
A White House representative said the two leaders discussed a face-to-face meeting during a recent phone call and that their teams would be in touch to arrange the details. The official refused to give details about the time and place of the meeting.
It is noteworthy that the Chinese leader last left China in January 2020 during a state visit to Myanmar. It was just days before Chinese health officials publicly acknowledged that the outbreak of COVID-19 in the city of Wuhan was not a serious problem. This year, Xi Jinping made a short trip to Hong Kong to celebrate the anniversary of China’s return to jurisdiction on July 1.
Tension will increase
Recently, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defied China’s threats to visit Taiwan, becoming the highest-ranking US official to visit the island in 25 years.
In response, P.R.C Military exercise begins off Taiwan coast. Island officials described it as a simulated attack.
China breaks off military and climate talks with US Beijing also imposed sanctions on Pelosi and her close relatives.
